Arevot Blri Duduk Hamuyt
Duduk-Ensemble from a sunny hill
No instrument weeps as beautifully as the duduk. It is often described as one of the most melancholic instruments of all — a quality closely connected with the history of Armenia, a country marked by catastrophe and by the genocide of the early 20th century. Perhaps this is why Armenia is sometimes called a “homeland of sorrow”.
This sorrow remains an indelible part of Armenian music, yet it is always paired with resilience, vitality and openness. All these facets are reflected in Armenia’s rich musical tradition, thousands of years old, which the New Zealand ethnomusicologist David Parsons once described as among the most outstanding he had ever encountered. In Arevot Blri Duduk Hamuyt, masters of this tradition come together in a solemn and deeply atmospheric concert programme — a rare opportunity to experience this music in a highly authentic form.
